Theme for 2023: “From Field to Fair”

AS WE ARE NOW USING THE ASSISTEXPO PROGRAMME TO RECORD ENTRIES, PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING CHANGES TO ENTER YOUR CRAFTS.

ALL ENTRIES SHOULD BE COMPLETED THROUGH ASSISTEXPO.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE COMPUTER ACCESS, CONTACT THE DIRECTOR TO GIVE YOUR ENTRY BEFORE WEDNESDAY AUGUST 2ND OR YOU WILL NOT BE REGISTERED AND THEREFORE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR JUDGING. 

COMPLETED TAGS WILL BE READY FOR PICK-UP AT THE OFFICE AFTER FRIDAY AUGUST 4TH .

SELF COMPLETED TAGS ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE

Rules and Regulations: 

1. Exhibits must be the work of the exhibitor.

2. Exhibitors can enter one article only in each category. For example, only one dress or only one jogging suit, but both items may be entered in their own category.

3. Exhibitors are not permitted to show the same article more than two years. Preference will be given to new work.

4. Soiled, defaced or old work will be disqualified.

5. Exhibitors must be a member of the Cumberland Township Agricultural Society (you must give your membership number when entering, (except as a youth (12 yrs. & under) and/or in the “Persons with disabilities” sections)

6.    ENTER ONLINE. (www.navanfair.com “exhibitors”) or email: ehodges@xplornet.com, or call 613 296 5301   

7.   All entry lists must be in no later than Friday, AUGUST 4th, 2023. Late entries will not be accepted.

8. Please indicate if you are a senior, new exhibitor or youth as there are special prizes for top entries in these categories.

9. Exhibits must be brought to the blue Exhibit Building on Wednesday, August 9th, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

10. Judging will take place on Thursday, August 10th, 2023. The Exhibit building will be closed until approximately 5 pm, or until judging is finished and the display is assembled. 

11. In case of no competition, the judge will only give a prize if work is worthy.

12. In case of a tie, the overall winner will be determined by the exhibitor with the greatest number of first prizes.

13. Exhibits cannot be removed until after 4:30 pm, Sunday, August 13th, 2023. The Exhibit Building will be closed at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday 13th August 2023, for disassembly of the displays. (This usually takes approximately half an hour.) 

NO PICK-UPS WILL BE ALLOWED UNTIL AFTER THIS DISASSEMBLY FOR SAFETY REASONS.

The Agricultural Society is not responsible for exhibits not claimed after 6 pm.

Prize money may be picked up at the Fair office any time after noon on Friday or throughout the weekend. Prizes not claimed before the end of September 2023 will be considered as a donation to the CTAS.

Afghan and quilt prize amounts will be printed beside the item if different from this list.

Each Category will have a Highest Points Prize of approximate value of $15-$30

JUDGING:  Articles will be judged using the scoring system according to the booklet “Home Craft Judging Standards for Ontario Fairs” unless otherwise stated. These standards are important if you want to know what the judge is looking for. CLASS: GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY (1st, 2nd, & 3rd prizes)

Small, decorated basket with non-perishable food items. (Baskets available if needed, contact Director)

Note: All items will be donated to a charitable organization e.g. Food Bank, Resource Centre    

CLASS: PEOPLE’S CHOICE: ($6) Judged by “the people”

 A doll or an animal for a young child. (Knit, Crochet or sew.)

People who visit the home craft division can cast their vote and choose their favourite one.          Sponsored by the Navan Women’s Institute.

CLASS: SEWING:  *Sample of material attached (SMA) to qualify

  1. Childs nightie.

  4. Baby Bib 2 in two different designs.
  5. Two fancy potholders.

  7. Shopping bag.( bag in a pocket!)

CLASS: KNITTING:  Note: -Yarn sample and label must be attached to qualify

  1. Shrug.

  6. Two novelty dish-cloth
  7. Baby blanket    
  8. Infinity scarf

CLASS: CROCHETING:  *Yarn sample and label must be attached to qualify

  1. Small lap afghan.
  2. Slippers.
  3. Any item in “Tunisian” style crocheting.
  4. Hair band/ear-warmer.
  5. Baby blanket.
  6. “Fancy” evening shawl.
  7. Hat./ Scarf set.

CLASS: NEEDLEWORK

  1. Hand embroidered cushion cover.
  2. Cross-stitch sampler. (Framed or mounted and ready to hang) Max 16”x16”
  3. Cross-stitch picture. (Framed or mounted and ready to hang) Max16”x16”                                            
  4. Partially completed, (at least 25%) counted cross stitch article displayed on embroidery hoops or stretcher bars, max. size 18” x 18”.  Pattern must accompany article as both front and back will be judged.

CLASS: QUILTING: 

*Any and all quilts are welcome, but to compete at the regional level, please see rules for the Grand Champion Quilt Competition below this list.

  1. Pieced and/or Appliqued twin or full sized quilt. (Hand quilted) – (at least 324″ perimeter to qualify for further competition)  Prizes $20, $15, $12
  2. Pieced and/or Appliqued, twin or full sized quilt (Machine quilted) on regular sewing machine – (at least 324” perimeter to qualify for further competition)  Prizes $15, $12, $10
  3. Lap or Crib quilt (Hand quilted)  judged for quilting only. Prizes $10, $8, $6
  4. Lap or Crib quilt (Machine quilted) on regular machine. Judged for quilting only.
  5. Rag quilt any size.
  6. Twin, Lap or Crib quilt, judged for piecing and/or applique only.
  7. A quilt block – no larger than 16” square – mounted so under side may be judged
  8. A quilted Tote bag, machine, or hand quilted. SMA
  9. First quilt, any technique, hand, or machine quilted, any size.
  10. Quilted wall-hangings, Any technique.            
  11. Cushion cover, machine, or hand quilted.                                    
  12. Two potholders in different designs– judged for workmanship and design only.
  13. Quilt made by two people, any size.

Grand Champion Hand Quilted Quilt Competition of Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies 
Entries must be solely made, and hand quilted by the exhibitor
Entry quilts must be a minimum of 324 inches measured on the perimeter (smaller quilts will not be eligible to proceed to the next level of competition) 
Grand Champion quilt will go to District level for judging.
Prizes: ribbon, plus $25, $15 & $10
Winner of District advances to the annual OAAS Convention for judging. 1st prize $500 
Machine Championship Quilt Competition       
Entries must be solely made, and machine quilted by the exhibitor.
Measured on the perimeter- total perimeter to be minimum of 324” – can be square or rectangular etc.
Grand Champion quilt/wall hanging will go to District level for judging.
Prizes: ribbon, plus $25, $15 & $10 
Winner of District advances to the annual OAAS Convention.

CLASS: CHRISTMAS  

  1.  Xmas tree made from fir cones
  2. Set of 3 Snowflakes – mounted for display (any medium)
  3. Xmas table centre-piece. 
  4. Xmas theme door hanger. 
  5. Any style ornament (3) – mounted for display
  6. Xmas stocking.          
  7. Small (empty) decorated gift box. (max 6” x 6”)
  8. Any Xmas themed craft
  9. Create a Nativity scene. (Max 18” x 18”)

CLASS: PAINTING/DRAWING:

  • Cover artist’s name or identification
  • Article must be mounted or framed – max size 30” including frame 
  • Article must be equipped and ready to hang

  • Open to amateurs only.
  • All prints, 4×6 or 5×7, are to be mounted on white Bristol board with a 1″ border all round, (not framed) with category & Fair name on back. Pictures must be taken in current year.
  • Absolutely NO digital image ENHANCING allowed. All enhanced photos will be disqualified.
  • Navan Fair is not responsible for any damage that may occur to photos that are submitted.  
  • Every effort will be made to protect photos from potential damage.

OAAS FAIR PHOTO & SLIDE CONTEST –   Digital Imaging now accepted 

The OAAS holds this competition annually in an effort to acquire photographs and slides for their “Competitions” at www.ontariofairs.com for a full list of eligible categories.

Deadline: December 1st, 2023. All photos for this competition must be of the 2023 Navan Fair. So bring your camera to this year’s fair and start ‘snappin’. You might have a winning shot!

a. We always need volunteers to work on the committee.

b. We appreciate any donations or sponsors for our prizes – if you or anyone you know may be interested in helping, or if you know of a business that may like to advertise at the fair, please let us know.

c. We would like to have people perform demonstrations during the fair i.e. flower arranging, spinning & weaving, cake decorating, tole painting, quilting, etc; or anything you think would be interesting to the Fair goers. Are you interested?
